Kinda liked this one from page one. Spoiler alert for those who don't want to know whats actually in the book.This one starts with Chad Halverson. A thirty six year old Halverson who's a black ops agent for the CIA's National Clandestine Service. Before the NCS Halverson was a Navy SEAL. He's a guy who knows how to take care of himself in any situation.
Halverson is on the run from his employers because he's got the info on the H5N1 mutated virus thats created millions of the walking dead all across the world.
This info names the US as the moneyman for the lab in Rotterdam that actually produced the virus.
Halverson knows they want to kill him before he can tell anyone what he knows. Of course with millions of walking dead out there Chad is wondering how much of the Govt or the CIA still exists and who whould be able to go after him at all.
Chad's also wondering just who the hell they think there is left to tell and what the hell anyone could do about it. Its to late. There are millions of walkers out there and not that many humans left. Who would care how it started as there would be nothing anyone could do about it now.
Halverson and Victoria, a couturiere , are currently on a sail boat off the California Coast. Its the only place the walking dead can't to them.
While at sea they rescue Blake Reno a reporter. Another survivor.
They also pick up another man a doctor and a young girl a student.
They eventually land at Alcatraz Island. A place that can provide shelter as long as there are no walkers.
So begins a pretty good read.
This one has Chad, Victoria, Reno, a man named Bascomb who's an egomaniac, his head of security Kobe Jones, the security forces on the island, Bascomb rule of the island, other survivors, a pit being dug, the dugeon, Bascombs wacky take on the Walkers and how to deal with them, the Walkers who find a way to get to the island and Chad Halvorson and Victoria finding a way out and a way to survive.

I am all about independent authors...but this was just bad...the writing was very weak...and I could have cared less about the characters....save yourself the time read something else..
The story begins with Halverson and Victoria in a boat trying to get away from zombies. Soon they rescue three other people Reno, a journalist; Parnel, a doctor; and Brittany a college student. While trying to find a safe place to hunker down they end up on the shores of Alcatraz. Soon they find themselves trapped in one man's world (Bascomb) as he rules the prison as though it is his kingdom with fake trials. To keep people from rising up he puts zombies and humans on trial as well as has them perform manual labor. Soon Haverson and Reno discover who and what Bascomb is a murderer, rapists, and egotistical nutcase. They form a plan to escape, but not before the zombies figured out how to create a bridge out of corpses and attack Alcatraz.
Like most post-apocalyptic, zombie stories this one was interesting if a bit over long. The narrative does move which makes the length bearable. However, I did feel that there was a bit too much dialogue in some areas,, like when everyone is trying to escape a bunch of flesh eating corpses. Otherwise it isn't a bad book. If you like zombies and end of the world scenarios then you might like this.
Sanctuary in Steel by Bryan Cassiday, is the third installment of the Chad Halverson zombie apocalypse book series. It is a standalone story. The horror novel has 346 pages and is written in third person, past tense. The plot has an ominous feel to it and the pacing grabs you and does not let go. Be prepared for an all-nighter, once you start the story you will need to see it through to the finish. I loved the diverse cast of characters, some of which you should be more afraid of than the zombies. The dialogue was great, serious and fast when it needed to be, and sometimes witty, to break the tension.
The story begins as agent Chad Halverson and Victoria Brady set sail along the west coast toward a supposed safe haven on Alcatraz. The island would give them a much needed reprieve from the flesh eating zombies. On their journey, they meet up with several more survivors that end up joining them. They soon realize their supposed sanctuary is anything but heavenly.
I would call this a paranormal/science fiction novel that revolves around the war against zombies. This is the third book in the Chad Alverson Zombie Apocalypse series. Now, I haven't read the others, so I can only judge the series off this one book alone, that is until I read the other two before it.
What's a better idea than having the book set at Alcatraz in San Francisco. No one can come in and no one can get out. It was an old military prison, that is isolated on an island out side of the San Francisco city. Once you start this book, you won't want to put it down. Bryan Cassiday really grabs you and holds you into this book all the way to the end.
The main characters were amazingly written. They team up together, a CIA agent, and a reporter, to be complete bad asses. Along the way they pick up stragglers and remain almost like the leaders of the group.
In current times, zombies are all the rage, and I'm sure this book will be loved by many. The writing is fast paced, the dialogue matches the intensity of the situation, and the setting could not be better. Not to mention the characters of the story, which can almost be called heroes. I give this book 5/5.
