John Petersen is a war-weary Army lieutenant assigned to guard the highest ranking survivors of Hitler's Third Reich at the Nuremberg trials. Petersen has two primary jobs first to keep Hermann Goering, Hitler's number 2 man, alive until he can be tried and hanged; and second, to keep his mercurial commanding officer, Douglas Gaffner, happy. These tasks don't always go hand-in-hand.

A combat veteran, Petersen has a lot to learn about post-war life. He never imagines that his friendship with Robert Simmons, an unrepentant trader on Nuremburg’s black market, will lead to tragedy. He never guesses that his affair with housekeeper Lisbeth Bichler will end in betrayal and heartbreak. He never imagines his wary friendship with Goering will jeopardize his standing with Gaffner. He doesn’t realize until too late the lengths to which Goering will go to cheat the hangman and deny the Allies their final revenge.

Set at the International Military Tribunal in Nuremburg, Germany, the story follows Petersen from the battlefields of World War II to the clandestine conflicts of the Cold War and into a shadowy, new world where intrigue, romance and a thriving Black Market intersect with the ripening conflict between East and West.

Entertaining first novel from a talented writer. As a first novel, one can forgive the redundancies encountered describing locations, characters, etc., this would be more distracting in future efforts. I actually read his second novel prior to this one and didn't see similar style issues. It's always difficult to meld historical facts with a good yarn, but the author has managed to do so, with a couple of unexpected twists toward the end. Overall I found the book to be a good read.

The War WidowA World War II Thriller eBook Kelly Durham Reviews

This was a somewhat interesting view of the Nazi War Crimes trial and has very little to do about a woman who was widowed by the war. If you are looking for a story about how a woman survived, forget it. The bulk of the book is about the hero's relationship to the Nazi war criminals on trial in Nuremberg after WWII. It was a quick read and gives a interesting view of Hermann Goering's megalomania. Not great literature, but entertaining.
I ended up really liking this book. Starts a bit slow, but gets the historical background perfectly, even using some exact quotes from the trial. Once things start happening, I got hooked and enjoyed the rest of the ride. The ending causes one to wonder-could it maybe, perhaps actually have happened that way?
He writes well, dialog is a little stilted but gets better as we get deeper in the novel. I recommend this wholeheartedly to fans of historical WWII fiction.
This was one of my best reads in a very long time. The subject matter is fascinating and the writing is crisp and fast moving. The hero is very likable and the bad guys are very easy to hate. In fact all the characters are interesting I thought the ending was great and it came as a complete surprise to me. In my opinion I believe that this book is best for those who have a sense of history although it is so good almost anyone will like it. I highly recommend it.
To call this book a "thriller" is somewhat of a misnomer as, to my mind, a thriller needs to be fast-paced and spell-binding. This is more of a benign river than a rushing mountain stream, and it took some time to attach myself to the story. However once I did it was compelling, and I am glad to have read it. It is refreshing to find books that don't depict Germans as cruel, cold and vicious, and I also prefer those that intermingle historical fact with fiction, and therefore add to my knowledge in some way. The War Widow did that and even though I don't understand the choice of title, I can recommend it to those who, like me, are fascinated by anything to do with WWII.
I found this book to be captivating and difficult to put down. It was a good mix of the main story line along with the main character's story of how he got there sprinkled throughout the book. The story does offer one possible explanation for one of WWII's mysteries that to my knowledge has never been completely solved. As another reviewer has pointed out, you are left hanging somewhat over what became of the girl and what actually happened to a secondary character in the story. I didn't see that either took away anything from the book though.
Another good one by Mr. Durham. A very compelling story all the way thru. If you've ever served in the military then you probably had a "Col. Gaffner" at sometime during your career. Also, this book is unique in that we are allowed into the lives of both the accused war criminals and the people who have to manage and guard them. I for one never gave this part too much attention. However, it must've been a bureaucratic nightmare to keep these ego-maniacs in some kind of order and here is where Mr.Durham does an excellent job. Who would've thought the Reichminister would've had a somewhat acceptable personality? In another area, a sort of side bar if you will, the story of the U.S. Officer dealing big time in the black market and the house frau being an agent for the government.

I think it was another one of Mr.Durham's really good books.
This is another excellent World War Two novel by Kelly Durham. As always with Durham, the strong suit of this novel is the complexity of the characterizations. The protagonist here, Lieutenant John Peterson, is a complex and interesting character that the reader quickly comes to like and care about. The storyline is interesting. Lt. Peterson is a decorated infantry officer, but when the war ends he is tasked to lead the details that are guarding the top Nazi leaders, including Herman Goering, for the Nuremberg War Crime Trials. This all leads to very interesting atmospherics amidst a plot that keeps the reader's interest and features twists and surprises.

The pace of the novel is on the slow side. For those looking for lots of action and shoot-em-ups, that is not what this is. In fact, this novel is something much better. There is espionage, romance, and as I said, well-developed characterizations. Recommended. RJB.
